I've been meaning to try out ombre nails for a while so when my mum randomly picked up this blue Rimmel shade for me the other day I thought it would work quite nicely combined with the 17 lilac shade I already had. All I did was layer on a couple of coats of the Rimmel polish to get an opaque colour as it is quite thin and then lightly sponge on a layer of the 17 shade, adding in extra blue where appropriate to make sure it blended evenly as well as painting extra lilac on the tips to give it an opaque finish. I then sealed it with my Nails Inc matte top coat, which actually seemed to help blend the two colours together even more, weirdly! Anyway I'd thought that I'd find it really hard to do this technique but it turned out to be a lot simpler than I'd anticipated and gave much better results than I'd first thought as well, so it's definitely worth a try if you haven't already!

long & short

Dress: COS; necklace: Topshop: flatforms: Vagabond via ASOS; clutch: ASOS.

Officially in love with my new Cos dress. It's my first ever Cos purchase and definitely won't be my last. It feels like I've been looking for the perfect black asymmetric dress for forever and after some unsuccessful attempts to find a somewhat cheaper alternative (such as this ASOS one which turned out to be a really weird fit on the shoulders) I finally just sucked it up and forked out the £79 for this one, and it was so worth it. The cut is just perfect and it is so comfortable and easy to wear. I can see myself styling it for both warm and cold weather, either layered up or pared down. I figured that for its first outing I'd style it pretty simply with my flatforms, neon clutch and a statement necklace, as I was going to watch my sister's dance show at our local theatre so a somewhat evening-y look was appropriate. I'm pretty sure I got a few stares, whether they were good or bad I don't know but, if I'm honest, I don't right care! It seems flatforms are the main culprit for offending narrow-minded types, take the majority of comments on this Boohoo facebook post that I spent a good length of time chuckling at the other day! They are a lot comfier than your usual six inch heels but it's safe to say that they take a bit of getting used to. I found this out almost immediately when  I wore mine out for
the first time and proceeded to fall right on my arse in the middle of Urban Outfitters. Yeah, ashamed doesn't even cover it. Because they are, y'know, flat you forget that there is a heel there for you to fall off, so the minute you lose you're balance you're a bit buggered! Still I absolutely adore them and after a couple more wears I've got a lot more used to them, but that's my word of warning to anyone whose thinking of getting a pair themselves: go for it, just try not to fall over in the middle of a public place like me!

Dress: Topshop; bag: Accessorize; sunglasses: Urban Outfitters; boots: ASOS.
An outfit worn earlier this week when the weather wasn't absolutely chucking it down, and I wanted to wear something simple and appropriately summery, seen as though sunshine here in the UK is so very rare and you have to make the most of it (flooding in June, why am I not surprised!?) Coincidentally this dress had gone into the Topshop sale for half price (although it's now sold out), which would probably bother me more if I hadn't got this one as a birthday present! Isn't it so annoying when that happens though? Buy something full price only to discover it ended up going on sale for a lot less? I suppose patience is a virtue, after all! Anyway, there are a few things I fancy online in the sale (Topshop and others!) but I'm not sure if I'm going to actually go ahead and fork out for anything yet. I'm sure the more I dither about it the decision will end up made for me when my sizes sell out, but that's probably a good thing considering the current state of my bank balance!

Day #3
1 - 5: I'm wearing; Vintage Levi's gilet, Urban Outfitters culottes H&M top, Urban Outfitters sunglasses, cross necklace from Regal Rose, Aldo bag. Anna's wearing; Urban Outfitters shorts, my (very old) Ben Sherman leather jacket and Marc B bag; 6: Marc by Marc Jacobs watch, ASOS spike and bead bracelets, friendship bracelets unknown/gifts; 7: Rings from Topshop and Nails in Nails Inc Portobello; 8: Organisers finally decided to put straw down in most of the arena to help with the mud which was greatly appreciated, if not a couple of days too late! 9: Had churros for the first time ever, very nice I must say especially with the warm chocolate sauce they served them with! 10: Circle pit/general pit-ing in the crowd during the almighty Lamb of God; 11: Main stage during Lamb of God; 12: Me and the brother. It seems that this is my "listening to metal" face, apparently; 13, 14, 15 & 16: Me, my mum and my sister. Obviously dad had to catch me mid-sentence in that last one; 17: Group photo! Check out my dad looking super-cool wearing his cap backwards haha! 18 & 19: Ahh Chris Cornell. Y U SO PRETTY? Oh and yeah, Soundgarden weren't too shabby either... 20: Final band of the night and weekend was the legendary Black Sabbath. The picture doesn't show it, but everyone went properly mental (including me) although the drunk teenagers right in front of us, one of which was wearing this Primark dinosaur onesie, falling about and generally being obnoxious were pretty irritating. They obviously just couldn't handle their liquor!

Last part of my couple of Download posts, had hoped to get this up earlier but I've been feeling really weird and indecisive lately and couldn't decide on the photos to post and then took ages to arrange them all in the layout I wanted. Plus I'm a little disappointed that they're mainly of a lower quality as I was just taking the odd pic with my phone while my dad took photos with my old Nikon Coolpix camera, while I only used my DSLR on the Sunday morning to take outfit photos. I didn't take the DSLR out with me to the arena because I didn't want to have to smuggle my zoom lens in past security so I could take decent band pictures, as you're technically not allowed to bring DSLR's in with a lens longer than 6 inches (although in the end at the VIP gates they didn't check anyone at all, weirdly, so I could have probably gotten away with it) plus I didn't particularly want it to get lost/damaged/stolen either so I ended up leaving it safely locked up in the bunkpad most of the time.

Anyway, as you can probably tell, the weather improved considerably on the Sunday, really warm and sunny with plenty of blue sky which made me very happy indeed. It was so nice to lose all the layers and throw on the sunnies and develop my (lack of a) tan a bit. We mainly stayed by the main stage again, watching Black Label Society (an old favourite of mine who I had meant to see in Manchester many years ago but it got cancelled thanks to Zakk Wylde's rival biker gang here in the UK, called Satan's Slaves I kid you not, assaulting one of the BLS fans on the way there and generally causing trouble. It sounds mental but it's genuinely true!) followed by Lamb of God, Megadeth, Soundgarden and of course Black Sabbath. It was an amazing end to a really good weekend and the family and I are now thinking about our next possible festival trip!

Day #1
1: Enjoying a Kopparberg in our day tent; 2: The RIP wristband and bracelet my sister made for me. Just realised wearing it like this kinda makes it look like I'm wearing my own obituary (!) 3 & 4: Rings from Topshop, nails are Nails Inc in Portobello, watch is Marc by Marc Jacobs, spike bracelet from ASOS, beaded bracelet Urban Outfitters, others gifts/unknown; 5 & 6: My mum and sister; 7: All of us heading out to the arena. I'm wearing H&M pleather skirt, ASOS coat, Topshop tee and shirt, Primark wellies! 8: Dad oh-so-kindly took a dodgy, blurry picture of me dancing like a tit to Chase & Status. I is well G, innit; 9 & 10: The Somme-like mud in the arena; 11: Watching Chase & Status while waiting for The Prodigy.

Day #2
1: Main stage crowd; 2: Tenacious D and their humorously shaped backdrop; 3: Me (obvz!) watching Metallica. Dislike how much this picture highlights my stupid underbite,  oh well! 4: Crowd for Metallica; 5 & 6: More Metallica. Oh how I love James Hetfield

As you can probably tell the weekend started off very wet and very, very muddy. So muddy, in fact, that when we arrived on the Wednesday night our car got completely stuck and we couldn't move it until the next day when the Live Nation Experience staff could be bothered to bring a truck round and pull us out! I didn't get any shots of the bunkpad we were staying in, mainly because it looked a bit of a state even from the start, what with all the mud we were walking in, plus it it didn't really look much like the promo pictures. It was about a foot lower in height and the "furniture" looked like it had been made by a GCSE Resistant Materials class, which was pretty disappointing considering how much we shelled out for it. My brother's podpad was worse, mind, they were pretty much sleeping on a glorified shelf and provided with an airbed that didn't even fit. I really shouldn't complain 'cause, having said that, to me, the podpads were a million times better than regular camping even just for the fact that we could park our car right next to it and use gas cylinders to cook food/make a brew on, and being able to sleep in an actual bed and keep your stuff safe and dry made it worth it. Plus electricity! Meaning I could use my straighteners every morning and prevent my hair from looking like total crap! Really, to be fair, the only problem was that it was just hideously overpriced! Anyhow moaning aside, on Friday we got to see Machine Head (I know most metal-head types love them but I've never been all that fussed, personally) followed by Chase & Status and then The Prodigy, the latter of which were pretty incredible.

Saturday was mainly spent at the main stage watching the likes of Steel Panther (funny but horrifically offensive to someone who considers herself as somewhat of a feminist. I just hope everyone takes what they do as it should be, a joke!) Tenacious D and of course Metallica. I also ventured over to the second stage to watch Killswitch Engage, as I had mentioned before, who are the one band I have been desperate to see for ages but never had the chance to. The only disappointing thing was that I had to leave before they finished their set so I could get a good spot for Metallica! Who were amazing, but of course I'm going to say that aren't I?

This is a scheduled post as I am currently away at Download Festival! Follow me on twitter for updates while I'm away!

Crop top: ASOS; skirt: H&M; necklace: Regal Rose; bracelets: ASOS and unknown; clutch: ASOS; wedge boots: ASOS.

Photo's taken earlier in the week before we went out for my dad's birthday. The pleather skirt and crop top combo is a favourite of mine at the moment, in the past I've usually avoided wearing all black for some reason but I'm finding myself more and more drawn to it recently, especially when I can pair it with a shit-load of gold jewellery! Hope you're all having a good weekend so far, I've scheduled this to post while I'll be watching (ie, dancing like a loon to) Killswitch Engage, a band I've been literally waiting for years to see. Regular posting will be back next week!

new & old

This is a scheduled post as I am currently away at Download Festival! Follow me on twitter for updates while I'm away!
Necklaces: Regal Rose

Discovered Regal Rose via Vicky's blog, #GOLLYGOSH, and found myself falling in love with the majority of their stock. I ended up buying the Vivienne Heavy Metal Chain Spike Necklace and the Rene Huge Gothic Cross Necklace, which is basically the cross necklace that I have been looking for, for like, forever. I am looking forward to buying from them again (preferably this, this and this) not only because the pieces are well-made and affordable but the delivery was super fast and nicely packaged as well. Very impressed!

1: Bracelets from ASOS; 2, 3 & 4: Rings and bracelet (well technically anklet but will be worn as bracelet) from Topshop; 5: Wire spiral ring from Miss Selfridge, open triangle ring from Topshop; 6: Triangle stack rings from Topshop; 7: Nails Inc nail polishes in Portobello and Westminster Bridge.

A few more of this week's new purchases. I've been after some new rings for a while as a lot of my old favourites have become pretty tarnished and are a tad cumbersome at times, so I thought I'd get plenty of smaller, stacking rings to mix and match with. Also really fancied some matte top coat nail polish and there just happened to be a Nails Inc concession in Debenhams at White Rose when I went shopping there the other day so I picked this up as well as a neon orange/pink shade to wear with it.

1: Metallica tee by And Finally @ Topshop; 2: Waterproof parka from ASOS 3: Crop top from ASOS; 4: Contrast sleeve sweat from ASOS; 5: Vagabond flatforms from ASOS.

New purchases continue (!) with a bit of an ASOS haul as well as a sneaky purchase of yet another 'Tallica tee from Topshop. When I saw this I just couldn't help myself though! Hoping to get plenty of wear out of all of this at Download Festival this week (except from the flatforms; flatforms + mud/general uneven ground = bad times!)

Customising my vintage Levi's sleeveless denim jacket.

Bank balance, fear not, as this week hasn't been all about buying new stuff. I rediscovered all these old band patches I used to have all over various bags and hoodies and decided the massive one would be perfect on my sleeveless denim jacket. A bit of machining on a big-ish stitch setting later, and voila! Hardly rocket science, but it's been forever since I did anything like this and it feels nice to get back into it again! I ended up on a bit of a roll and proceeded to cut the sleeves off about 5 or 6 different shirts that I'd been meaning to do for AGES and had never got round to. It doesn't exactly warrant a tutorial, all I did was cut off the sleeves behind the shoulder seam and then do a quick single hem round the arm hole to hide the rough edges. I also removed the sleeves off the grey marl Topshop midi dress as I have two of these, for which there is a perfectly good reason I may add (ie. I bought my regular size and discovered, after wearing it, that it was a bit big and that it was also available in a tall length so then bought the size down in the tall range. It's a good reason, honest!) which I think looks all the better for it!

1 & 2; Tartan shirt from Topshop many, many years ago; 3: Floral shirt from Urban Outfitters again from many years ago; 4: Pastel check shirt vintage Ben Sherman; 5: Blue check shirt from Urban Outfitters yet again from many, many years ago! 6 & 7: Topshop midi dress.

just killing time

Sleeveless denim jacket: vintage Levis; dress: Topshop; bag: Accessorize; boots: ASOS; sunglasses: Urban Outfitters; cross necklace: Urban Outfitters; skull necklace: Topshop.

This dress has got to be one of my favourites at the moment. It's so light and easy to wear and is perfect for that sort of 90's grungy look, which we should all know by now I am a big fan of. Obviously I had to play on that and pair it with my vintage sleeveless denim jacket and, after purchasing these sunglasses yesterday, I just had to put them on as well to take these photos. I was worried that round frames wouldn't suit me originally, I'd thought maybe having a round face combined with round sunglasses would make my face look the size of a planet, but I'd had these sat in my shopping basket online while I dithered about it but then actually going into UO yesterday and trying them on meant that I discovered that even with a round, chubby face like mine, you can still get away with retro round frames! I actually think they suit me a lot more than most other styles and I just know they'll make any outfit just that bit edgier!

Also, in case any of you are wondering why on earth I am wearing thick black tights when the weather has been so warm, I have a wax booked in a week's time so those of you who are aware of waxing, er, "preparation" can deduce from that what you will! God, it sucks being a girl sometimes.
